Small Morning Prayer

To be trusted,
rather than rewarded,
this morning.
To be used all day,
as a shirt
rather than a factory,
to be lifted upward as a cup,
rather than a flag.
To be spread
beneath the feet of children
rather than lead men,
to be clear as the water they drink.
To be an inch of path
rather than the map,
taking it farther than yesterday,
as far as the poor kneeling in their clearing.
To return and hear the evening
climbing through the wick
to the flame in the lamp
would be good. And then
the light leaving the spine.
To be empty rather than filled,
to be even less than empty
and more than open,
to grow rather than to know,
that would also be good.
